What is a Master Catechist?

Master Catechists are parish specialists in religious education and extensions of the teaching office of the bishop. They are people of faith called by the parish community, and certified by the bishop, to hand on to others the tradition and teachings of the Catholic Church, and are recognized as leaders in catechetics.

Master Catechist Curriculum

Prerequisite: Basic Certification as a Catechist

The Master Catechist has an understanding of the basic teachings of the Catholic Church regarding scripture, tradition and spirituality, as well as familiarity with current educational and psychological research.

The initial course of study includes:

  • Catholic Approach to the Hebrew Scriptures (R100)
  • Catholic Approach to the Christian Scriptures (R120)
  • Liturgy and Sacraments in the Catholic Tradition (R220)
  • The Church (R235)
  • Introduction to Catholic Moral Theology (R300)
  • Introduction to Catholic Spiritual Life (R310)
  • Social Justice (R340)
  • Leadership in the Faith Community (M229)
  • Faith Developmental (M308)
  • An advanced methods course appropriate for a particular ministerial context
  • Catechetical Observation (M197)
  • Catechetical Seminar (M198)
  • Catechetical Project (M199)

Candidates are also expected to develop their spiritual growth through 1 retreat and annual days of prayer while they are completing the required coursework.

How Does A Catechist Become A Master Catechist In The Diocese Of Orange?

Candidates for the Master Catechist Certificate will:

  • complete an application form and submit it to the IPM office;
  • arrange an interview with the IPM Director of Studies;
  • submit written letters of recommendation from the pastor and one other person;

The Master Catechist Certificate is valid for a four year period.
